It is finally autumn and the rest of the year will get darker and colder from here on out. As the nights are still relatively light it is the perfect time to start thinking about how you will look after your garden for the coming months but also looking after the birds who visit. BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) provide lots of tips and information on birds so you can care for them.
The BTO has been around since 1933 and is one of the leading authorities for caring for wild birds in the world. They provide a high quality bird care range which we proudly stock at Smiths Nurseries. This charitable research institute collects data and puts together information about birds to educate the public about them.
There are over 40,000 volunteers that help out the organisation by bird watching across the UK to monitor birds and gain more knowledge. Surveys are carried out by volunteers to count the number of birds of certain species and the organisation is trying to learn more about the mysterious process that is migration.
Head south for winter
As many people know some birds head south for the winter to go where the weather is warmer and food is more plentiful. It is really important to keep topping up your bird feed at this time of year for birds that don’t migrate. BTO create a number of bird feeders that you can hang from trees, place on fences and more plus they are treated to make sure they are protected from bacteria growth.
If you enjoy bird watching yourself you will have an idea of the type of birds that visit your garden, so can tailor the type of food you buy to suit your frequent visitors. BTO bird food includes Nutrivian which ensures birds get a well balanced diet and the food stays fresher. With big 1.5kg and 3kg bags you will certainly have enough to keep the birds happy throughout the colder seasons too.
